Tom Hardy/Interview
BY ㅈ ㅏ몽

PPAPER Man, June 11, 2015

“The more dazzling the truth through the dark man TOM HARDY”

Adding this poetic google transl. of the magazine’s blurb:

Man’s true nature and his beard

From false to true, the men have different levels and types. He may not be a woman, and woman’s confidant; he may look odd affectation, but in fact sincere heart; he may dress in good faith, but it is a selfish liar; or, he is so true nature, he is what women are looking for, the one and only true love.

Spring wind blowing, the true nature of man peach, their energy, their creation, in love or in love fighting on the battlefield fighting, God is here, no hate, only love.

Tom Hardy/Interview
BY ㅈ ㅏ몽

I am a (proud) father on a cell phone

On his body full of tattoos, two (dedicated
to his son) are in Italian. “I do not speak [the language] but
it sounds sweeter [in Italian],” he says. Yet he, the protagonist
of a bonecrusher movie, does not feel macho. On the contrary:
in his latest film he performs seated while on a phone

Text Valeria Vignale - photo by Andrew Medichini

“I do not feel strong or manly, as I think that a man should be. I’m just a middle-class Londoner. But certain tough guys that are scary, and who sometimes scare me, too, I know and can imitate well.”

And yes, the 36-year-old Englishman Tom Hardy arrived like a punch into the stomach of Hollywood: noticed in the role of violent and eccentric inmate Bronson, cult movie by Nicolas Winding Refn, was immediately hired to become Bane, the fierce anti-Batman (TDKR) and even Mad Max: Fury Road, which we will see in 2015. But you can tell by the writing tattooed above that there is a sensitive soul in the mass of muscle.

On his torso that looks like a billboard, including images of the Madonna and Mona Lisa, not only is the name of Charlotte (Riley, who he met five years ago on the set of Wuthering Heights), but also phrases dedicated to his son Louis Thomas (6 yrs old) with his ex Rachael Speed.

And to show how many emotional chords the beautiful Tom is able to touch on the screen, here he is venturing into roles that are the exact opposite of a strongman in action. While we wait to see and hear him sing in an Elton John biopic (Rocketman), on 30 April a film that was highly acclaimed at the last Venice film festival was released in theaters: Steven Knight’s Locke, where Hardy plays for once the everyman, but even more messed up. His life is overturned in the time it takes for a car trip, at night, from Birmingham to London.

Everything takes place while he is driving and talking on the phone with his wife, children, colleagues and former lover, trying to save work and relationships from an event-bomb: the unexpected birth of a son, the result of a chance encounter. Hardy does not move or hardly, but knows how to engage with the face and words, and the suspense of a very human story.

After so many action movies, what was it like performing always sitting, just talking on the phone?

“It shows that the actor does not have to "do” but to “think”.
Empathize, empathize with the lives of others. I had dialogues full of tension: the voices of others, on the phone, i fed on emotions even if I could never look [the other actors] in the eyes.“

He had to drive for real?

"The car was mainly transported on a truck, because through the windows could be seen flowing lights and machines like on a real journey, but in some scenes I really drove. And perhaps they are the best.”

He has a beard and looks a little ‘aged’: tricks to make anonymous the Tom Hardy we know?

“What can I say? The look is the last thing I care about: it is at the service of the story.”

When Locke tells his wife of cheating on her just once, in a moment of solitude, she replies: “The difference between 'never’ and 'once’ is like that between good and evil.” Do you agree?

“There is no absolute answer to these moral dilemmas. In theory we could all agree, but the experience will change the vision of all of us. And then Locke does not want to give up the baby, because he has an obsession: to avoid the big mistake that his father made with him.”

Also aims to avoid the mistakes he has seen his parents make?

“Yeah, too bad then there is no way out: maybe you will not do the same, but others, different and unexpected. Life, for me, lies in how you (are?) constrained by family destiny, by certain mechanisms that are inherited. But whether you are looking to follow the same path or escape it, it is the journey itself that gives the final direction.”

Two tattoos are dedicated to his son, Louis Thomas: “Proud Father” and “My beautiful son”, written in Italian. Why Italian?

“So they sound much more sweet, though I do not speak your language. "My beautiful son” [in English] is rougher, no? (Does a big gruff voice. And moves his t-shirt to show a lettering below the neck, ed.) French also has a nice sound; in fact I even tattooed “Sans Souci,” no worries.“

Among his passions is Africa: he made a documentary on poaching, "Poaching Wars”, for a British TV network. Battle for animal rights?

“I am pleased to lend a helping hand to nonprofit organizations that are fighting against the hunting and trafficking of animals, from Siberia to Vietnam. And making documentaries is my way of knowing the world and knocking off from the assembly line of film.”

Did having a writer father and a painter mother influence the ambition to become an artist yourself?

“Having a creative family has supported me in my career, but it was certainly not the initial spring: I came to this profession from a path of despair that could have taken me to jail more easily than onto a stage! (He has had problems with drugs and alcohol, ed.) I learned to channel my fears: I have been sooo lucky.”

I need to have short hair because of the wig that I’m wearing in the film that I’m doing with Alejandro at the moment. This beard is also because of that movie we’re shooting right now. So Leo and I are both wearing beards until we finish ‘Alejandro’s Beast. Yeah, that’s why I look so good at the moment.

“Everybody knew that (a new) ‘Mad Max’ was out there and that they were casting. I was on the set with Joel Edgerton at the time, shooting ‘Warrior’ when he received the script. I thought, oh well, that’s quite right that it went to an Australian. I won’t pay it any more mind. Then we carried on shooting ‘Warrior.’

*

“But when I was doing ‘Inception’ after ‘Warrior,’ George hadn’t found his Max yet. He was still looking at various actors. I was asked to come in and meet George and Nico Lathouris (cowriter) as dramaturg.”

Actors went through a unique audition process where they were asked to read from their pick of five radically different scenarios.

*

“we had a conversation but it turned into a different affair altogether. We sat and talked for a couple of hours about theater and character analysis—nerdy stuff which I really like.

*

Human dimension

“Women should be celebrated more across the arts,”

“It’s fantastic that Charlize is leading this. She has such a profoundly unique character.”

*

Women play an important role in his life, Tom claimed.

“My mom (Anne Hardy) is the most special woman in the world, next to my wife (Charlotte Riley) and hopefully, one day, maybe a daughter.

Women are the most profoundly important people who supported my growth and development as a person.

My relationship with my mother and strong women—their support and innate wisdom have helped me carve my way through today.

So, I have tremendous and profound respect for women

. But I am still human. My wife would probably pick me apart for still being irritating (laughs). I’m a bloke, you know.”

*

Do I know anything about cars, maintenance and engineering?”

he repeated the question aloud. “No,”

“Nothing, so I can only drive an automatic. I learned to drive when I was 30 because I live in London.

We have the Tube. You also get around on buses.

You have sneakers on so you can use your feet and walk. You get out in the rain and enjoy that.

*

“I didn’t really see much need for a car until I was 30. I had to take my partner at the time (Rachael Speed) to the hospital so she could give birth to Louis (their son, born in 2008). So, I learned to drive.”

Tom Hardy/Interview
BY ㅈ ㅏ몽

In Mad Max Fury Road plays the loner Max Rockatansky, the same role in a trilogy about 35 years ago made the fortune of Mel Gibson. Did you get his blessing?

He called me and was very friendly. But, let me clarify, I actually stole his job … This film was to be done in 2003, and then it would have been him. Because of lot of financial problems, geographical, meteorological, even war (Gulf) it’s been continually postponed and eventually Mel decided he was too old. Frankly, I nearly was too: I signed on in 2009, filmed in 2012, did reshoots in 2013. Now at last I’ve seen it and we are in 2015.

If you could choose an item which has stuck in the memory of the original Mad Max?

The leather jacket of Mel, and of course the V8, the super rigged car called Interceptor.

When calling you ‘the best actor of his generation’ what do you think?

Damn, what happened to Leonardo Dicaprio? Does he really not count? I understand, he’s already passed the fateful barrier of 40 years, just like Christian Bale! I, on the other hand, at almost 38 is just a kid …

Are you a movie buff?

I’m inattentive and lazy. My human Wikipedia is Noomi Rapace, since we shot both The Drop and Child 44 together.  She meets my every question with resignation: 'Yes, he is famous. You know the Godfather? Here, he is the director.’

How would you define success?

The fart of a fly.

In Mad Max you play a hero, but in The Revenant you’re once again a villain, like Bane, the archenemy of Batman in The Dark Knight Rises. What roles do you prefer?

In reality I’m not that analytical. When I accept a part, I go by instinct, but most of all I don’t want to repeat myself.

It is said that you don’t even read the script.

I prefer to get someone to tell it to me. I read that of The Revenant because Dicaprio forced me. It was he, with whom I had worked in Inception, who suggested me to Iñarritu.

Did you like it?

I read half and hastened to accept the part. Let’s face it, only a crazy actor would not trust a suggestion from Dicaprio and a director like Iñarritu.

But it is true in Mad Max there was no real script?

Well, there were 3,500 storyboard drawings, all the scenes described as a super bubble. In the film there is little dialogue: So, who cares about the script.

The rumors from the set say that you had a little problem with Charlize Theron. Possible? And what about your reputation for toughness?

First of all, she is taller than me. And then she, in the role of Emperess Furiousa, and his tribe of five wives, all models, young and beautiful, doesn’t make them go through poor Mad Max. But jokes aside, Charlize is a great actress and a super professional . It is me who can be difficult, because sometimes I stay in character even off the set.

Did you have to do dangerous stunts?

For those which were impossible there was a professional, Jacob Tomuri, who’s also in my other two movies, Legend and The Revenant. He looks so much like me that we are taken for brothers; the only difference is the accent, he is a New Zealander. Otherwise I managed myself, like when I had to take a leap of a few meters from a vehicle that went at 40 kilometers per hour. The worrying thing was that director George Miller wanted the effect of Wile E Coyote, the cartoon character which is constantly smashed but then keeps chasing the enemy Beep Beep.

Does he have other extreme roles planned?

Well, I’m going to play Elton John in the musical biopic Rocketman. A little extreme, no?

Then you know how to sing …

As a young man I did a bit of rap, and deep down, there are always songs. I practice doing the singing taxi driver in the film London Road, based on a stage musical in London.
